This One Time In Ariel Yoga Class

My whole world was literally and metaphorically turned upside-down

I took my first yoga class in Seattle, Washington in the fall of 1997.

It was a basic flow class for beginners. I think it was a Hatha Yoga class. I fell in love with the practice and became friends with teacher who was originally from the east coast, like me.

Over time, I came to prefer practicing at home more than in class.

YouTube wasn’t around in the early 2000’s. I used VHS tapes to follow along with a few famous yoga teachers, such as Rodney Yee. He was one of my favorites.

Eventually, I knew enough poses and had read enough about yoga to practice my own style on any given day, according to my mood.

However, once I moved away from Seattle to live in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, I stopped practicing altogether.

After a year in the Caribbean, I returned to Philadelphia and began taking classes again, including the occasional Bikram class.

Those are the ones held in a heated room and they are intense! I wasn’t a big fan, but sometimes I liked to sweat profusely like that in a yoga class.
