Feeling homesick and nostalgic overseas has made me shed tears and unnecessary baggage. How do you celebrate this time of year?

As I impatiently nurse myself back to health at home in Germany and Halloween photos from friends back in the States keep popping up on my phone, I am reminded of one of the most memorable times of my life.

This whole month of October has made me feel more homesick and nostalgic than I have since I moved to Europe from Philadelphia a little more than four years ago. It’s my favorite time of year to be in Philly, and I’ve felt that way for as long as I can remember.

The leaves change through a myriad of glorious colors that literally take my breath away. I used to color my hair various shades of red almost every autumn as a result of this burst of natural display of artistry that surrounded me.

That still happens here in my part of Germany. However, what I don’t get here is all of the amazing, prize-worthy decorations that are sprawled across many properties throughout America during this time of year.
