Falling for My Massage Therapy Teacher

I was putty in his hands until the day everything between us changed

It was not love at first sight, but there was a spark of some kind the very first time my primary massage school teacher stood in front of the classroom to speak to all of us who aspired to be licensed massage therapists in the state of Pennsylvania.

His name was Alan. He had a full head of gray hair, thick glasses, dressed like a professor, and was adorable with his corny jokes that broke the ice as we tried to settle into and wrap our minds around our full-time, six month intensive massage therapy program.

I was a little nervous to be in a class of roughly 25 people where we used massage tables as desks. The first half of the day consisted of lectures on Anatomy, Kinesiology, Pathology, and other cerebral knowledge. The second half of the day was all hands-on, which usually required us to be massaged or massage one of our classmates.

Alan was our massage guru with close to 30 years of experience in the field. He had stories for days. Many of us looked up to him as though he was some sort of Jedi master. I certainly did.
